Words For The Taking

I know it’s been a while. I’ve been working on a couple things. This wasn’t one of them. But who am I not to honor the creative process?

Words For The Taking

I found you there, tucked in the blue room of
Powell’s World Of Books, between unrecognized
poets towards the end of the Bs. Well, I guess not
you, but your book, and not even a book of poetry,
rather, your book about plagiarism of said poetry. I’m not
even sure why it is I went to this aisle. I crack open the book,
with its underlined passages and crisp pages, and
it reads just that sardonic Southern voice I remember,
first heard back in English 306, talking about
line breaks, whether rhyming is worth it,
questioning my word choice. Those poems
still sit in a box, waiting to be mailed ten years later or
on a forgotten blog somewhere, just words for the taking.
I was a careless man, but I wonder if somewhere beneath
several years of mortgage knowledge, there’s still a spark
you helped foment ten years ago. I heard you
don’t write poetry anymore, not after what happened,
understandably, though, it’s a shame someone else took
that from you. I close the book, tuck it under my arm, and
wonder exactly where it is I put that box.
